Vapour spout
Vapour spout. This type of weak localized vortex may occur over water near a lava flow that has reached the coast. Lava pouring into the sea boils the water, causing local cloud formation (top left), and raises the temperature of the surrounding water. If wind blowing around the area creates a rotating air mass, this rotation in combination with strong updrafts from the heated sea surface and the saturated atmosphere from the clouds can create a funnel of air. The reduced pressure within the funnel may draw in some of the water vapour from the nearby clouds, to form a vapour spout

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Vapour Spout" showcases a mesmerizing natural phenomenon that occurs near the coast when lava meets water. The image captures a weak localized vortex, resembling a miniature tornado, emerging from the sea's surface towards the sky. This breathtaking sight is caused by the interaction between scorching hot lava pouring into the ocean and its impact on both water and air. As molten rock enters the cool waters, it instantly boils them, creating an ethereal cloud formation above (visible at the top left of the picture). Additionally, this process elevates temperatures in surrounding areas. When strong winds sweep across this heated region, they generate a rotating mass of air. Combined with powerful updrafts from the warm sea surface and moisture-saturated atmosphere due to cloud presence, these conditions give rise to an atmospheric funnel known as a vapour spout. The reduced pressure within this funnel draws in water vapor from nearby clouds, resulting in its distinctive appearance. This extraordinary display exemplifies nature's ability to create awe-inspiring phenomena through intricate interactions between elements such as wind patterns, temperature differentials, and moisture content. Taken along America's extreme coastline in Hawaii by Science Photo Library—a renowned source for scientific imagery—this photograph not only offers a glimpse into our planet's dynamic climate but also serves as a reminder of Earth's remarkable beauty and power.
