Triassic of Australia, prehistoric scene C013 / 7114

Triassic of Australia. Artwork of a scene on the shores of a lake reconstructed from fossils found in Australia dating from the Triassic (250 to 200 million years ago). At left, lycopod trees (Pleuromeia longicaulis). At top right, the seed fern Dicroidium. At lower right, the herbivore Dicynodont (a mammal-like therapsid, widespread in the late Permian, survived through the Triassic). Dicynodont fossils are rare in Australia, but have been confirmed in Triassic formations. At lower left, the insect Clatrotitan andersoni on a gymnosperm. At upper right, a female scorpionfly. At upper left, a fly closely-related to the Limoniidae (small crane flies)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Triassic period, offering a glimpse into the prehistoric scene that once unfolded on the shores of an ancient Australian lake. Through meticulous reconstruction using fossils dating from 250 to 200 million years ago, this artwork brings to life a world teeming with diverse flora and fauna. On the left side of the image, towering lycopod trees known as Pleuromeia longicaulis dominate the landscape. These ancient giants provide shelter for various creatures that inhabit this primeval ecosystem. At the top right corner stands Dicroidium, a seed fern that adds lushness to the surroundings. Intriguingly rare in Australia but confirmed within Triassic formations are fossils of Dicynodonts – mammal-like therapsids depicted here as herbivores grazing near the lake's edge. Lower left reveals an insect called Clatrotitan andersoni perched upon a gymnosperm plant while upper right showcases a female scorpionfly fluttering its delicate wings. The upper left corner introduces us to another fascinating creature closely related to small crane flies – a fly species belonging to Limoniidae family. As we explore further, we encounter evidence of early mammals alongside these mesmerizing insects and plants. This remarkable artwork not only captures our imagination but also provides valuable insights into paleontology and biology during this distant era. It serves as a testament to Australia's rich fossil record and invites us to marvel at Earth's ever-evolving natural history.
