Triangulum Galaxy, 19th century

Triangulum Galaxy. 19th-century astronomical observation of the Triangulum Galaxy (M33, NGC 598). North is at top. At the time, such objects were still thought to be nebulae. M33 is some 3 million light years away, in the constellation of Triangulum. This 60-minute exposure was obtained in October 1898, from the observatory in Daramona, Westmeath, Ireland. This observatory was operated by Irish astronomer William Edward Wilson (1851-1908), one of the pioneers of the new techniques of astrophotography. Published in Astronomical and Physical Researches (1900)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Triangulum Galaxy, a stunning astronomical observation from the 19th century. Taken in October 1898 by Irish astronomer William Edward Wilson, this image captures the beauty of M33 (NGC 598), also known as the Triangulum Galaxy. At that time, these celestial objects were still believed to be nebulae. Located approximately 3 million light years away in the constellation of Triangulum, this long-exposure photograph was obtained at Daramona Observatory in Westmeath, Ireland. Wilson's pioneering work in astrophotography allowed him to capture this mesmerizing view of our universe. Published in Astronomical and Physical Researches (1900), this historical piece offers us a glimpse into early astronomical photographs and highlights Wilson's contribution to the field of astronomy. The monochrome image reveals intricate details of this spiral galaxy, showcasing its galactic structure against a backdrop of stars. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to both scientific progress and human curiosity about the mysteries beyond our planet. It reminds us how far we have come since those early days when galaxies like M33 were still shrouded in mystery. Today, thanks to advancements in technology and continued exploration, we continue to uncover new wonders within our vast cosmos.
