Traditional olive millstones, Spain
Traditional olive millstones, Spain. These conical millstones consist of carved granite, and were used in the traditional Spanish method of crushing harvested olives. The millstones were driven by animals such as mules or horses, grinding the olives into a paste prior to pressing to obtain ollive oil. Modern mills mostly use stainless steel metal-toothed grinders, though some still use millstones. These millstones were donated by the Carbonell olive oil producer. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the traditional olive millstones found in Spain. These conical millstones, meticulously carved out of granite, were an integral part of the age-old Spanish method of crushing harvested olives. Powered by animals like mules or horses, these ancient machines ground the olives into a smooth paste before pressing them to extract precious olive oil. While modern mills predominantly employ stainless steel metal-toothed grinders, some still cherish the use of these historic millstones. Donated by Carbonell olive oil producer, this particular display at the Botanical Gardens in Cordoba offers a glimpse into the rich agricultural history and technological advancements that have shaped Spain's renowned olive oil production. The image captures not just a piece of machinery but also echoes centuries of farming traditions and techniques passed down through generations. The rugged beauty and durability of these granite millstones symbolize their significance in extracting liquid gold from nature's bounty. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, it serves as a reminder that progress often comes hand-in-hand with preserving our cultural heritage. The presence of these millstones evokes nostalgia for simpler times while acknowledging how far technology has propelled us forward in agriculture and food production.
