Spiral galaxy NGC 6872, composite image C016 / 9730

Spiral galaxy NGC 6872, composite image. This large barred spiral galaxy, also called the Condor Galaxy, is over 212 million light years distant in the constellation of Pavo. From tip to tip, it is 522, 000 light years across. It is interacting with the smaller galaxy IC 4970 (upper centre). This composite image consists of visible light data from the Very Large Telescope, ultraviolet data from GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer), and infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. At upper left is a previously unknown tidal dwarf galaxy candidate. It appears only in ultraviolet, indicating the presence of many hot young stars. Image published in 2013

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of spiral galaxy NGC 6872, also known as the Condor Galaxy. Located a staggering 212 million light years away in the constellation of Pavo, this colossal barred spiral galaxy stretches an astonishing 522,000 light years from end to end. The image captures its interaction with a smaller galaxy called IC 4970, which can be seen at the upper center. What makes this composite image truly remarkable is that it combines data from multiple sources to provide a comprehensive view of NGC 6872. Visible light data from the Very Large Telescope, ultraviolet data from GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer), and infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope all contribute to unraveling the mysteries hidden within this celestial wonder. Of particular interest is an unexpected discovery in the upper left corner: a previously unknown tidal dwarf galaxy candidate. This enigmatic entity only reveals itself in ultraviolet wavelengths, indicating its abundance of young and hot stars. Published by NASA/GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER/ESO/JPL-CALTECH/DSS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY in 2013, this awe-inspiring photograph invites us to contemplate our place within the vastness of space and marvel at the intricate dance between galaxies billions of light years away.
