Simulation of a magnetic field reversal on Earth
Reversal of the Earths magnetic field. Second of three pictures showing the field structure produced by a numerical simulation of the geodynamo, the source of the Earths magnetic field. Here, the simulation has run for 36, 000 years, and is the middle of a field reversal. The colours represent field lines with outward (yellow) and inward (blue) components. Reversals occur when the north and south magnetic poles swap position relative to the surface. Many such reversals are recorded in rocks near mid-ocean ridges. See also pictures E080/009 and E080/011. (Published in Nature, September 1995) Nature Vol 377 p.203-209, 21 September 1995
