Sikhote-Alin meteorite fragments

Sikhote-Alin meteorite fragments. Small (the cube measures 2.5cm squared) pieces of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite that fell to Earth from space in northern Siberia on the morning of 12 February 1947. This was an iron meteorite. A fireball appeared in the north, leaving a trail of smoke and dust in the atmosphere for many kilometres as the meteorite disintegrated. The fragments were scattered over a large area, some making small craters where they landed. This was one of the few iron meteorite falls to be witnessed, and one of the most spectacular

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases small fragments of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite, which descended from space and landed in northern Siberia on February 12,1947. Comprised of iron, these cube-shaped pieces measure approximately 2.5cm squared each. The event was marked by a breathtaking fireball that emerged in the north, leaving behind a trail of smoke and dust that stretched across several kilometers as the meteorite disintegrated upon entry into Earth's atmosphere. The impact resulted in the scattering of these remarkable fragments over a vast area, some even creating miniature craters upon landing. This extraordinary occurrence stands out as one of the rare witnessed falls of an iron meteorite and remains among the most awe-inspiring events ever recorded. Against a pristine white background, this group photograph highlights not only their geological significance but also their astronomical importance. These mineral-rich remnants offer invaluable insights into our understanding of celestial bodies beyond our planet. Dating back to the mid-20th century, this collection serves as a testament to humanity's fascination with outer space and its enduring quest for knowledge about our universe's mysteries. With its intricate details meticulously captured through photography, this image allows us to marvel at nature's wonders while contemplating our place within it.
