EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Queen Victoria, the iconic monarch of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) captures a detailed view of her regal head on a three pence coin. Known for her remarkable ascension to the throne at just 18 years old, Queen Victoria's reign spanned an impressive 63 years, making it the longest in English history. In 1840, she entered into matrimony with her first cousin Albert, solidifying their union as one of great significance during this Victorian era. The three pence coin depicted here holds historical value as well; also referred to as a threepenny or thruppenny bit, it ceased circulation in the UK after its last minting in 1941. The magnification level used for this print allows us to appreciate intricate details when viewed at a height of 10cm. From her distinct profile and royal features to the relief and metallic essence exuded by this currency piece, every aspect contributes to capturing Queen Victoria's essence. This photograph not only serves as a tribute to an influential figurehead but also provides insight into Victorian culture and society through its representation of currency and portraiture. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured both artistry and history within this image without any commercial intent.
