Pleiades open star cluster, 19th century
Pleiades open star cluster. 19th-century astronomical observation of the Pleiades open star cluster (M45) and its associated nebulosity. North is at top. M45 is also called the Seven Sisters, after the seven brightest stars visible from Earth. It is around 450 light years away, in the constellation of Taurus. This 4-hour exposure was obtained on 8 December 1888, from the observatory in Maghull, Merseyside, UK. This observatory was operated by British amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts (1829-1904), one of the pioneers of the new techniques of astrophotography

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Pleiades open star cluster, a celestial wonder observed in the 19th century. The image, taken on December 8,1888, at the Maghull Observatory in Merseyside, UK, was captured by Isaac Roberts - a renowned British amateur astronomer and pioneer of astrophotography techniques. The Pleiades open star cluster, also known as M45 or the Seven Sisters due to its seven brightest stars visible from Earth, is situated approximately 450 light years away in the constellation of Taurus. This stunning four-hour exposure reveals not only the mesmerizing arrangement of stars but also captures its associated nebulosity. Roberts' groundbreaking work with early astronomical photographs paved the way for future advancements in astrophysics and our understanding of the universe. His dedication to capturing these celestial marvels has left an indelible mark on history. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece today, we are reminded of both the beauty and vastness of space. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and exploration that continues to drive us forward into new frontiers. This remarkable photograph invites us to contemplate our place within this cosmic tapestry while appreciating those who came before us in their quest for knowledge about our extraordinary universe.
