Petrified wood, SEM
Petrified wood, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Petrifaction is a term used to describe the fossilisation of wood. It occurs when pieces of wood fall into sediments and are rapidly covered, preventing normal decay. Over long periods of time the wood decays. As it decays, the wood is replaced by minerals which are deposited from solution in ground water. This forms an exact replica of the original, preserving the texture of the bark and even the growth rings, as seen here. Magnification: x20 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of petrified wood, captured through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Petrification is a fascinating process that occurs when wood falls into sediment and becomes rapidly covered, preventing its natural decay. Over an extensive period of time, the wood gradually decomposes while being replaced by minerals from groundwater solutions. The result is an astonishingly detailed replica of the original wood, preserving even its bark texture and growth rings. In this image, magnified twenty times and printed at ten centimetres wide, we are granted a close-up view of nature's remarkable preservation skills. Every growth ring tells a story about the life cycle of this ancient tree that once stood tall in lush forests. The false colours applied to enhance visual clarity add another layer of intrigue to this scientific marvel. With elements encompassing botany, biology, paleontology, and more, this photograph serves as a testament to the wonders hidden within our planet's geological history. It offers researchers invaluable insights into past ecosystems and aids in understanding Earth's evolution over millions of years. Courtesy of Science Photo Library - renowned for their exceptional collection - this print invites us to appreciate both the artistry found in nature itself and humanity's ability to capture its awe-inspiring intricacies through advanced scientific techniques.
