Paramecium bursaria protozoan, micrograph

Paramecium bursaria protozoan, light micrograph. This ciliate protozoan inhabits freshwater, where it feeds mainly on bacteria. It moves by beating its cilia, hair-like extensions that cover its body. The small green bodies inside the protozoan are individual Zoochlorella sp. algae, which have a symbiotic relationship with the protozoan. They photosynthesise inside the Paramecium, providing it with sugars and oxygen, while deriving protection from their host. Darkfield illumination. Magnification: x510 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of the Paramecium bursaria protozoan. In this stunning light micrograph, we are given a glimpse into the life of this ciliate protozoan that thrives in freshwater environments. Its main source of sustenance comes from bacteria, which it consumes with its hair-like extensions called cilia. What makes this image even more fascinating is the presence of small green bodies within the protozoan. These individual Zoochlorella sp. algae have formed a symbiotic relationship with their host. They reside inside the Paramecium and engage in photosynthesis, providing essential sugars and oxygen to their host while receiving protection in return. The darkfield illumination used for this photograph enhances every detail, allowing us to appreciate the complexity of these microscopic organisms. With a magnification level of x510 when printed at 10cm wide, we can truly marvel at nature's intricacies on such a minuscule scale. This print not only highlights the beauty found within our natural world but also serves as a reminder of how interconnected different species can be. It is through such symbiotic relationships that life flourishes and adapts to various environments. Whether you are interested in biology, zoology or simply captivated by wildlife photography, this image offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into unseen ecosystems thriving beneath our feet.
