Orpiment on pyrite

Yellow crystals of orpiment (arsenic sulphide) on a sample of pyrite (iron sulphide). Orpiment forms soft, heavy, fragile crystals with a greasy lustre. It fuses easily, giving off arsenic fumes with a strong garlic smell that conceal fumes of sulphur dioxide. The mineral is deposited by hot springs but is also found around fumaroles, metamorphic dolomites and in low-temperature hydrothermal veins associated with realgar and native arsenic. Orpiment is used to remove hair in the tanning of hides and as a source of arsenic. Pyrite is the most widespread sulphide mineral

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning combination of orpiment and pyrite minerals. The yellow crystals of orpiment, composed of arsenic sulphide, beautifully contrast against the sample of pyrite, which is an iron sulphide mineral. Orpiment forms delicate crystals with a soft texture and a glossy appearance that resembles grease. Interestingly, this mineral easily melts when exposed to heat, releasing pungent fumes with a distinct garlic-like odor that masks the scent of sulphur dioxide. It is commonly found in hot springs as well as around fumaroles, metamorphic dolomites, and low-temperature hydrothermal veins alongside realgar and native arsenic. Beyond its geological significance, orpiment has practical applications too. For instance, it plays a role in tanning hides by removing hair effectively. Moreover, it serves as a valuable source of arsenic for various purposes. Accompanied by pyrite - the most abundant sulphide mineral - this print provides insight into Earth's diverse geological formations. Whether you are passionate about geology or simply fascinated by nature's wonders, this image from Science Photo Library offers an intriguing glimpse into these remarkable minerals' intricate beauty and their significant presence within our planet's composition.
