Orion constellations, 1829 C016 / 4410

Orion constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 24, showing the constellations of Orion (the Hunter), Lepus (the Hare), Eridanus (the river), Sceptrum Brandenburgicum, and Psalterium Georgii

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Orion constellations as depicted in a 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas "Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh" by Kornelius Reissig. As an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg, Reissig meticulously crafted this early Russian star atlas based on earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed. The black background enhances the historical charm of this astronomical illustration, which features mythological figures and animals representing the Cyrillic-labeled constellations. Plate 24 specifically presents Orion (the Hunter), Lepus (the Hare), Eridanus (the river), Sceptrum Brandenburgicum, and Psalterium Georgii. With its gold leaf accents and punched holes for alignment purposes, this artwork seamlessly combines scientific accuracy with artistic elegance. The celestial cartography displayed here offers a glimpse into the rich history of astronomy during the 1800s. As we admire this remarkable piece, we are transported back to a time when star maps were painstakingly created by hand. This publication serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with mapping out our place within the vastness of space. Thanks to Science Photo Library's preservation efforts, we can now appreciate not only the scientific significance but also the aesthetic beauty found within these pages of celestial knowledge.
