Optical photo of the visual binary star Almach

The visual binary star Almach, also known as Gamma Andromedae, is the third brightest star in the constellation of Andromeda. Although Almach is a triple star system, the third component is too faint to be seen. The major component of the system, Almach A, is an orange giant star (spectral type K3 II). Almach B is a smaller, greenish star (spectral type AOp), which shows up with a blue tinge in this photograph. Almach is located 260 light-years from Earth

Binary Binary Star Cosmology Star Stellar

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing visual binary star Almach, also known as Gamma Andromedae. Nestled in the constellation of Andromeda, Almach holds the distinction of being the third brightest star in its celestial neighborhood. While it may appear as a single entity to our naked eyes, this system is actually composed of three stars. However, the third component remains elusive and too faint for observation. The dominant member of this stellar trio is Almach A, an awe-inspiring orange giant star classified as a K3 II spectral type. Its sheer size and radiance command attention against the backdrop of space. Standing alongside is Almach B, a smaller yet striking greenish star with an intriguing spectral type called AOp. In this particular photograph, we are treated to a rare sight: Almach B displays a subtle blue tinge that adds another layer of enchantment to its already captivating presence. Located approximately 260 light-years away from our planet Earth, Almach continues to captivate astronomers and stargazers alike with its celestial dance within the cosmos. This remarkable image serves as a testament to both the beauty and complexity found within our vast universe—a reminder that there is always more than meets the eye when exploring these distant cosmic wonders.
