Omega Centauri (NGC 5139), optical image
Small Magellanic Cloud. Optical image of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in the constellation Tucana, the toucan. North is at top. The SMC (centre left) is a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way. It lies around 195, 000 light years from Earth. To its right is the globular star cluster 47 Tucanae, a huge ball of hundreds of thousands of stars which lies around 20, 000 light years from Earth. The bright star at lower centre is Beta Hydri in the neighbouring constellation Hydrus, the little snake. These constellations are near the southern celestial pole, and are visible all year round from the southern hemisphere. They are never visible for northern observers

This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Omega Centauri (NGC 5139), a stunning optical image captured within the Small Magellanic Cloud. Located in the constellation Tucana, resembling a toucan, this celestial wonder is positioned with its north at the top. The Small Magellanic Cloud, seen at the center-left of the image, serves as a satellite galaxy to our very own Milky Way and resides approximately 195, 000 light years away from Earth. Adjacent to it on the right side lies an awe-inspiring sight - globular star cluster 47 Tucanae. This colossal ball composed of hundreds of thousands of stars is situated around 20, 000 light years away from our planet. Adding further brilliance to this cosmic spectacle is Beta Hydri, a radiant star located at the lower center which belongs to the neighboring constellation Hydrus or "the little snake. " These extraordinary constellations are found near the southern celestial pole and offer year-round visibility for those fortunate enough to reside in the southern hemisphere. Unfortunately, they remain hidden from northern observers due to their exclusive appearance in southern skies. Immerse yourself in this breathtaking snapshot that encapsulates science, space exploration, astronomy enthusiasts' dreams come true!
