Ojibwe Native American petition, 1849

Ojibwe Native American petition. Artwork of the birch bark petition presented by Native Americans of the Ojibwe Tribe to US President Fillmore in 1849. The lines in the image unify the hearts and minds of the figures, confirming the authority of the delegation to speak for the Lake Superior Clans. The delegation is lead by Chief Buffalo of the Crane Clan. He is supported by a group of headmen represented by the totem of their clan: the catfish, man-fish, bear and three martens. The lakes are at bottom left. From a copy made by Seth Eastman in 1849

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Ojibwe Native American petition of 1849, a significant artwork that symbolizes unity and authority. The image depicts the birch bark petition presented by members of the Ojibwe Tribe to US President Fillmore. The lines within the illustration serve as a powerful representation, connecting the hearts and minds of each figure and affirming the delegation's legitimacy in speaking for the Lake Superior Clans. Leading this influential group is Chief Buffalo of the Crane Clan, who stands at the forefront with unwavering support from other headmen represented by their respective clan totems: catfish, man-fish, bear, and three martens. At bottom left lie serene lakes that hold deep significance for these Native Americans. Created in 1849 by Seth Eastman, this artwork not only reflects an important moment in history but also highlights various aspects such as wildlife (crane), indigenous culture (totems), diplomacy (ambassador), anthropology (native American clans), and development of writing. The Ojibwe Tribe's petition holds immense historical value as it sheds light on North American indigenous communities' struggles during that era. This photograph provides us with a glimpse into their rich heritage while reminding us of their resilience and determination to have their voices heard.
