Niccolo Tartaglia, Italian mathematician

Niccolo Tartaglia (1499-1557). 1546 woodcut portrait of the Italian mathematician Niccolo Tartaglia. Tartaglias greatest mathematical achievement was the solution to cubic equations. He was not initially credited with this, as his friend Cardano betrayed his confidence and published the solution as his own. Tartaglias main enthusiasm was ballistics. His treatise on gunnery, Nova Scientia (1537; New Science ) showed how the path of a projectile is curved and that a projectile travels the furthest distance when fired at an angle of 45 degrees to the ground. From his book Questi et inventioni diverse

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Niccolo Tartaglia, an influential Italian mathematician from the 16th century. The woodcut portrait, created in 1546, captures his intellectual prowess and determination. Tartaglia's most notable mathematical achievement was his groundbreaking solution to cubic equations. However, he faced a bitter betrayal when his friend Cardano published this solution as his own, denying Tartaglia the recognition he deserved. While mathematics was at the core of Tartaglia's work, his true passion lay in ballistics. His treatise on gunnery titled "Nova Scientia" revealed revolutionary insights into projectile motion. He demonstrated that a projectile travels farthest when fired at a precise angle of 45 degrees to the ground, challenging conventional wisdom. This historical artwork not only portrays Tartaglia's contribution to science but also reflects the tumultuous nature of intellectual pursuits during that era. Despite facing adversity and having his ideas stolen, Tartaglia remained dedicated to advancing knowledge in both mathematics and physics. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this significant moment in history through their lens. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of Tartaglia's remarkable legacy and invites us to appreciate the resilience and brilliance of one man who shaped our understanding of mathematics and ballistics forever.
