Nerve synapse and serotonin molecule
Nerve synapse and serotonin neurotransmitter molecule. Computer artwork of a junction, or synapse, between two nerve cells (neurons, blue). As the electrical signal reaches the presynaptic end of a neuron it triggers the release of neurotransmitters across the gap, or synaptic cleft, between the two cells. The serotonin neurotransmitter bind to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, changing the membranes excitability and triggering an electrical impulse. In the serotonin molecule, the atoms (spheres) are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (green), nitrogen (blue) and oxygen (red). A deficiency of serotonin in the brain has been shown to cause depression. This has led to the development of the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) antidepressants, such as Prozac (fluoxetine)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of nerve synapses and the serotonin molecule. In this computer artwork, we witness a junction between two nerve cells, with their mesmerizing blue glow. As an electrical signal reaches the end of a neuron, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters across the synaptic cleft, creating a vital connection between these cells. The star of this image is undoubtedly the serotonin neurotransmitter molecule. Its vibrant colors depict carbon in grey, hydrogen in green, nitrogen in blue, and oxygen in red spheres. Serotonin plays a crucial role in our brain's chemistry and has been linked to mood regulation. A deficiency of this neurotransmitter has been associated with depression. In fact, understanding serotonin's impact on mental health led to groundbreaking advancements like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), including Prozac (fluoxetine). These antidepressants work by increasing levels of available serotonin within our brains. Alfred Pasieka's stunning artwork not only highlights the beauty found within our nervous system but also reminds us of its complexity. It serves as a visual reminder that even at microscopic levels, there are countless connections and molecules working together to shape our thoughts and emotions.
