Mountain gorillas C014 / 0990

Mountain gorilla. Mother and baby mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) in a forest. Mountain gorillas are found in cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. The high elevation and rainfall makes this habitat wet and cold. The adults eat many kilograms of vegetation daily (roots, leaves and stems) and can reach over 2 metres in height. A slow reproductive rate has left mountain gorillas vulnerable to habitat destruction, poaching and war, making them highly endangered. Photographed in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intimate moment between a mother and baby mountain gorilla in their natural habitat. The lush green forest serves as the backdrop for this heartwarming scene, showcasing the beauty of these magnificent creatures. Mountain gorillas, known scientifically as Gorilla beringei beringei, inhabit the cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire. The challenging environment with its high elevation and heavy rainfall creates a wet and cold habitat for these gentle giants. Towering at over 2 meters in height, adult mountain gorillas consume kilograms of vegetation daily including roots, leaves, and stems. Unfortunately, their slow reproductive rate has made them vulnerable to various threats such as habitat destruction caused by human activities like war and poaching. This vulnerability has pushed mountain gorillas to the brink of extinction, making them highly endangered species. Photographed within Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda by Peter J. Raymond from Science Photo Library (not affiliated with any commercial use), this image showcases not only the furry charm but also highlights their critical conservation status. As we gaze upon this young duo resting amidst damp foliage, it reminds us of our responsibility to protect these incredible animals that play an essential role in maintaining biodiversity within Central Africa's rainforests. Let this photograph serve as a reminder of why we must strive to preserve their natural habitats for future generations to witness such awe-inspiring moments firsthand.
