Mosquito larva, light micrograph

Mosquito larva. Polarised light micrograph of the body of a larva of an Anopheles sp. mosquito. The larva lies parallel to the waters surface. At the end of the abdomen (left) is a long breathing siphon with an end spiracle. This is in contact with the air, to take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. The body is divided into 8 segments, with a dark central tubular gut and muscles (yellow lines). The swelling behind the head is the thorax. The head has a pair of compound eyes, pair of antennae and a pair of feeding brushes on the upper lip (labrum) which beat to cause a current to flow towards the mouth, which then filters out any food particles. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a mosquito larva, captured under polarised light microscopy. The Anopheles sp. larva is elegantly positioned parallel to the water's surface, revealing its remarkable anatomy and life stage. At first glance, one cannot help but be drawn to the long breathing siphon extending from the abdomen, equipped with an end spiracle for oxygen intake and carbon dioxide removal. The body is segmented into eight distinct sections, housing a dark central tubular gut and vibrant muscles highlighted by yellow lines. The thorax stands out as a noticeable swelling behind the head, which features a pair of compound eyes that provide keen vision in this aquatic environment. Additionally, a pair of antennae can be observed alongside feeding brushes on the upper lip (labrum). These brushes rhythmically beat to create currents that guide food particles towards the mouth for filtration. With a magnification factor of x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across, this image allows us to appreciate nature's intricacies on an intimate level. It serves as a testament to both scientific curiosity and artistic beauty within biology and entomology fields. Captured by Science Photo Library, this mesmerizing print invites viewers into the world of mosquito development while shedding light on their reproductive cycle and unique anatomical adaptations.
