Model of the Luna 3 spacecraft
Model of the Luna 3 spacecraft. This Soviet unmanned spacecraft was launched on 4 October 1959. It was the first spacecraft to return pictures of the previously unseen far side of the Moon. It obtained 29 pictures as its trajectory took it past the Moon on 7 October 1959. Eleven days later, on 18 October 1959, as its orbit brought it back towards Earth, it successfully transmitted around 17 of its pictures. Contact with the spacecraft was lost on 22 October 1959

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a model of the Luna 3 spacecraft, an iconic symbol of Soviet engineering and technological prowess. Launched on October 4,1959, this unmanned spacecraft holds a significant place in history as it was the first to capture images of the far side of the Moon. As it passed by our celestial neighbor on October 7th, Luna 3 managed to obtain an impressive collection of 29 pictures. Eleven days later, on October 18th, as its trajectory brought it back towards Earth, Luna 3 successfully transmitted around 17 of these groundbreaking photographs. However, contact with the spacecraft was unfortunately lost on October 22nd. Displayed at an exhibition in Russia during the month of October (year not specified), this model serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit for lunar exploration and scientific discovery. It stands as a testament to the remarkable achievements made by Soviet scientists and engineers during the space race era. Steeped in historical significance and representing a pivotal moment in planetary science and space flight technology from over half a century ago, this single photograph encapsulates both curiosity-driven exploration and human ingenuity that continue to drive us forward into new frontiers.
