EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a merchant's token from the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of quack remedies and alternative currencies. The metal token belonged to Basil Burchell, the sole proprietor of the Anodyne Necklace for Children Cutting Teeth. This necklace was a popular yet dubious solution dating back to the 1700s, believed to protect teething infants from illness during an era when infant mortality rates were alarmingly high in London due to unsanitary living conditions. Tokens like these served as both currency substitutes and advertisements for merchants' products. Crafted from cheaper metals and possessing lower value than traditional money, they played an essential role in facilitating transactions while promoting their respective businesses. This particular token, with its historical charm and antique allure, hails from the nineteenth century. The image is set against a striking black background that accentuates its metallic sheen. It evokes curiosity about bygone eras when superstitions surrounding health prevailed alongside genuine medical advancements. From quackery to legitimate remedies, this token embodies an intriguing chapter in healthcare history. As we delve into this snapshot of the past through Science Photo Library's lens, we are reminded of how far medicine has progressed since those times while appreciating tokens as tangible artifacts bridging commerce and culture across centuries gone by.
