Linguistics table, 17th century

Linguistics table. 17th century table titled Tabula Combinatoria. The description at top says that this is a combinatory table showing the most ancient alphabets of the world, from which it can be seen that all modern alphabets retain vestiges of the ancient forms. This table is from the work Turris Babel (Tower of Babel, 1679) by the German Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680). It was one of the first books about the language and archaeology of the ancient civilisations of Babylon, Nineveh and Egypt. Languages mentioned here include Samaritan, Hebrew and Syrian. Also mentioned are cryptographic codes and authors, such as Abraham of Balmis and the transitus fluminis characters

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a linguistics table from the 17th century, titled Tabula Combinatoria. The intricate diagram, featured in Athanasius Kircher's renowned work Turris Babel (Tower of Babel), offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient alphabets of the world. As we explore this remarkable piece, it becomes evident that modern alphabets still bear traces of their ancient predecessors. Kircher, a German Jesuit scholar ahead of his time, delved into language and archaeology to unravel the mysteries surrounding Babylon, Nineveh, and Egypt. This particular table highlights languages like Samaritan, Hebrew, and Syrian while also touching upon cryptographic codes and influential authors such as Abraham of Balmis. The monochromatic illustration transports us back to an era where script and writing were integral aspects of communication. It serves as a testament to the rich historical tapestry woven by these ancient civilizations in the Middle East. As we examine each meticulously crafted symbol on this linguistic tableau, we gain insight into comparative linguistics and witness how different scripts evolved over time. The importance placed on preserving knowledge through written language is palpable within this artifact. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured not only an archaeological treasure but also a significant milestone in our understanding of human communication throughout history. This image invites us to ponder the profound impact that language continues to have on our lives today.
