Life as a Nurse, 1940

Life as a Nurse, 1940. From Life as a Nurse, booklet on nursing during World War II, in Tucks Better Little Book series. At the beginning of the war it was estimated that up to 67, 000 nurses were needed to care for the expected air-raid casualties - more than the number of trained nurses in employment. A Civil Nursing Reserve was set up - 7000 trained nurses, 3000 assistant nurses and also nursing auxiliaries. The auxiliaries were given fifty hours training in hospital before they started work. 6, 200 from the Civil Nursing Reserve were working in hospitals in June 1940. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Life as a Nurse, 1940" offers a glimpse into the crucial role of nurses during World War II. In the early stages of the war, it became evident that an overwhelming number of trained nurses were required to care for the anticipated air-raid casualties. Astonishingly, this demand surpassed the existing number of employed nurses at that time. To address this urgent need, a Civil Nursing Reserve was established, comprising 7,000 trained nurses along with 3,000 assistant nurses and nursing auxiliaries. The latter group underwent fifty hours of hospital training before commencing their duties. By June 1940, approximately 6,200 members from the Civil Nursing Reserve were actively working in hospitals across Britain. The image showcases one such nurse diligently attending to her patients amidst challenging circumstances on the home front. Her dedication and compassion shine through as she navigates her profession during these tumultuous times. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of women's invaluable contributions to both medicine and society during World War II. Captured by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd in London in 1940 as part of their Better Little Book series on nursing during wartime, this print provides us with an insight into an era when women stepped up to fulfill critical roles traditionally dominated by men. It stands as a testament to resilience and sacrifice while honoring those who selflessly served their country in healthcare professions throughout World War II.
