Lefebvre petrol car, 1897

Lefebvre petrol car. 19th-century artwork of a Lefebvre petrol car. This is a small carriage in dog-cart style. The four passengers on its open top are seated back-to-back in a riding style known in French as dos-a-dos. The engine is a small two-cylinder one called the Pygmee, developed by French engineer Leon Lefebvre. The steering mechanism is at left. Later cars, using more powerful engines, would be enclosed. Artwork from the first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases a Lefebvre petrol car, a true marvel of its time. The small carriage, designed in an elegant dog-cart style, is beautifully depicted with four passengers seated back-to-back in the unique French riding style known as dos-a-dos. This image, taken from the first volume of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by Jules-Louis Breton, transports us to an era where technological advancements were rapidly transforming the world. The Pygmee engine, developed by talented French engineer Leon Lefebvre, powers this remarkable vehicle. With its two-cylinder design and left-sided steering mechanism visible in the illustration, it represents a significant leap forward in automotive engineering during that period. Although open-top and accommodating only four passengers at most, future models would evolve to enclose their cabins and feature more powerful engines. The monochrome artwork captures not only the historical significance but also the spirit of adventure associated with early automobile travel. As we gaze upon this scene filled with anticipation and curiosity for what lies ahead on that road less traveled, we are reminded of how far transportation technology has come since then. This print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation while offering us a glimpse into our past—a time when men like Leon Lefebvre paved the way for modern-day automobiles. It stands as a tribute to both French craftsmanship and scientific progress that continues to shape our lives today.
