First car to use Michelin tyres, 1897

First car to use Michelin tyres. 19th-century artwork of the first car using Michelin tyres. The Michelin brothers, Edouard and Andre, had a rubber factory in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Starting with bicycles, they founded their tyre company in 1888 and patented their removable design in 1891. Four years later they did the same with cars. This Eclair car covered 1200 kilometres on Michelin tyres in the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race of 1895. Michelin is one of the worlds largest tyre manufacturers. Artwork from the first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases the historic moment when Michelin revolutionized the automotive industry with their innovative tyres. In this monochrome print, we are transported back to 1897, witnessing the first car ever to be equipped with Michelin tyres. The visionary Michelin brothers, Edouard and Andre, had already made a name for themselves in the rubber industry by establishing their tyre company in 1888. Their groundbreaking removable design was patented just three years later. The significance of this milestone is further emphasized by the Eclair car featured in the artwork. This remarkable vehicle covered an impressive distance of 1200 kilometers on Michelin tyres during the renowned Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race of 1895. It marked a turning point not only for automobile engineering but also for transportation technology as a whole. Jules-Louis Breton's artistic depiction captures both the historical essence and technological marvel behind this pioneering achievement. As we admire this illustration from La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle, it becomes evident that Michelin's contribution to wheel technology propelled them into becoming one of today's largest tyre manufacturers worldwide. Let us cherish this glimpse into history and appreciate how far we have come since that monumental moment when these French inventors forever changed our roads and journeys with their revolutionary creation - the first car to use Michelin tyres.
