John Ogilby, Scottish translator

John Ogilby (1600-1676), Scottish translator and cartographer. Ogilbys early career was as lord deputy and tutor in Ireland for the Earl of Strafford. His translation work started when he learnt Latin at Cambridge following his return to England from Ireland after the Civil War. However, Ogilby is best known for what is considered one of the first British road atlases, published as Britannia Atlas in 1675. This artwork is from one of the books he translated, Johannes Nieuhofs An embassy from the East-India Company (London, 1669)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed figure of John Ogilby, a Scottish translator and cartographer who left an indelible mark on British history. Born in 1600, Ogilby's early career was shaped by his role as lord deputy and tutor in Ireland for the Earl of Strafford. It was during this time that he developed a passion for translation, particularly after mastering Latin at Cambridge upon his return to England following the Civil War. However, it is Ogilby's groundbreaking work as a cartographer that truly solidified his legacy. His most renowned creation, the Britannia Atlas published in 1675, is widely regarded as one of the first British road atlases ever produced. This remarkable artwork we see before us today originates from one of Ogilby's translated books: Johannes Nieuhof's "An embassy from the East-India Company" published in London in 1669. The monochromatic illustration exudes an air of historical significance and offers a glimpse into both Ogilby's expertise as a cartographic genius and his dedication to expanding geographical knowledge during the 17th century. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of Ogilby's contributions but also of the rich tapestry woven by individuals like him who have shaped our understanding of geography and history through their artistry and intellect.
