Hubble image of black hole
Black hole. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data that reveals the presence of a black hole in the centre of the M84 galaxy. The image shows the velocity of gas seen along a long, narrow slit. Gas moving towards Earth appears left of centre, whilst gas moving away from us is right of centre. The light produced by approaching gas appears blue, whilst that from receding gas appears red; this change in frequency is known as the Doppler Effect. The material swirling around the black hole is travelling at up to 400 kilometres per second. This indicates that the black hole is at least 300 million times more massive than our Sun

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible Hubble image of a black hole at the heart of the M84 galaxy. The data captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) unveils this enigmatic celestial phenomenon, revealing its presence in stunning detail. The image depicts a long, narrow slit that displays the velocity of gas surrounding the black hole. As we observe this mesmerizing snapshot, we can discern that gas moving towards Earth is positioned left of center, while gas moving away from us appears on the right side. This distinction is made evident through a fascinating optical effect known as the Doppler Effect. The approaching gas emits blue light due to its motion, whereas receding gas emits red light. What makes this discovery even more mind-boggling is realizing that the material swirling around this black hole reaches astonishing speeds of up to 400 kilometers per second. Such tremendous velocities indicate that this particular black hole possesses a mass at least 300 million times greater than our Sun. The photograph offers an intriguing glimpse into one of nature's most peculiar and awe-inspiring phenomena – a supermassive black hole residing at the core of M84 galaxy. Its immense gravitational pull shapes and influences everything within its reach, leaving us marveling at both its power and mystery.
