Socrates, greek philosopher

Socrates (c.470-399 BC), Greek philosopher. One of the most famous thinkers of antiquity, Socrates introduced a new critical approach to philosophy and science. He spent much of his life in discussion and debate with both the youth of Athens and leading philosophers of the day. He enjoyed a reputation as the wisest of all men, but in 399 BC - having been convicted of neglecting the city gods and corrupting the youth of Athens - he was forced to drink a fatal draught of hemlock. His ideas and life story are known to us through the writings of his pupil, Plato. This engraving first appeared in The History of Philosophy by Thomas Stanley, published in London in 1656

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Socrates, a renowned Greek philosopher who revolutionized the world of philosophy and science. Socrates (c. 470-399 BC) is depicted in this 17th-century engraving, which beautifully portrays his wisdom and intellectual prowess. Known as one of the greatest thinkers in history, Socrates introduced a new critical approach to philosophy that challenged traditional beliefs and encouraged open dialogue. He spent much of his life engaging in thought-provoking discussions with both young Athenians and esteemed philosophers of his time. Despite being revered as the wisest man alive, tragedy befell Socrates when he was unjustly convicted for neglecting the city gods and corrupting the youth of Athens. In 399 BC, he faced an agonizing decision: drink a fatal draught of hemlock or renounce his principles. Faced with unwavering conviction, he chose to embrace death rather than compromise on his philosophical ideals. The profound impact left by Socrates continues to resonate through generations thanks to Plato's writings about him. This historical engraving from Thomas Stanley's "The History of Philosophy" transports us back to ancient Athens, allowing us to glimpse into the mind of this extraordinary thinker. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this momentous figure in monochrome elegance, highlighting every intricate detail that brings Socrates' story to life once again.
