Goose barnacle, light micrograph

Goose barnacle. Polarised light micrograph of the body of a goose barnacle (Lepas anatifera). The goose barnacle is a Cirripedian crustacean. The pink stalk is derived from the elongated head and cements the barnacle to the surface. The rest of the body (brownish-black) is a carapace or mantle of five calcified plates. When the valves of the mantle open, the thoracic limbs (bright blue), hang out. The limbs, which are covered in fine bristles (cirri), are thrust in and out allowing the cirri to filter out small plankton which are then conveyed to its mouth. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate details of a goose barnacle, as seen under polarised light. The body of this fascinating Cirripedian crustacean is showcased in all its glory, with its pink stalk serving as an anchor that cements it to the surface. Composed of five calcified plates, the brownish-black carapace or mantle forms the majority of its body. When the valves of the mantle open, bright blue thoracic limbs extend outward. These limbs are covered in fine bristles known as cirri, which play a crucial role in filtering out small plankton for consumption. This delicate feeding mechanism allows the goose barnacle to thrive and sustain itself within its marine habitat. The magnification level used for this print allows viewers to appreciate every minute detail when printed at 10 centimetres high. It offers a unique perspective on the anatomy and biology of these intriguing creatures found in our oceans. Nature enthusiasts and those interested in zoology will find themselves captivated by this image's beauty and scientific significance. Its portrayal showcases not only the complexity but also highlights how organisms adapt to their environment for survival. This print from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of both nature's diversity and our ongoing exploration into understanding life on Earth's many wonders.
