Giordano Bruno teaching

Giordano Bruno teaching. 1 of 3. Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) was an Italian philosopher who supported the Copernican view that the Earth revolved around the Sun. He also went beyond this to propose the infinity of space and the multiplicity of worlds. He was a member of the Dominican Order but left in 1576 to travel widely in Europe and air his radical views. He was arrested by the Inquisition in 1592 and, on refusing to recant his unorthodox theories, was burned alive at the stake. This bas relief panel shows Bruno (right) teaching others about his theories. It is found on the plinth of his statue, erected in 1889 in the Campo Dei Fiori in Rome, Italy. See H402/592 for the statue, and H402/593-5 for a series of plaques showing Brunos life

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, depicting Giordano Bruno passionately teaching his revolutionary theories to a group of eager listeners. Giordano Bruno, an Italian philosopher and former member of the Dominican Order, was known for his unwavering support of the Copernican view that challenged the prevailing belief that Earth was at the center of the universe. In addition to this groundbreaking idea, he boldly proposed concepts such as the infinity of space and the existence of multiple worlds. The bas relief panel showcased in this image is situated on the plinth of Bruno's statue, erected in 1889 at Campo Dei Fiori in Rome, Italy. It serves as a powerful reminder of his life story and enduring legacy. Despite facing immense opposition from religious authorities during his time, Bruno refused to recant his unorthodox theories even when confronted by the Inquisition. Tragically, he paid the ultimate price for his beliefs - being burned alive at stake in 1600. Through this photograph, we are transported back to witness Bruno's intellectual prowess and persuasive abilities firsthand. His teachings not only challenged established dogmas but also laid important foundations for future advancements in cosmology and our understanding of our place within an ever-expanding universe. This image stands as a testament to both human curiosity and resilience against oppression throughout history.
