Fomalhaut dust ring, ALMA image C014 / 5044
Fomalhaut dust ring, combined HST and ALMA image. The Fomalhaut star system and its planet and dust ring are around 25 light years from Earth in the constellation of Piscis Austrinus. The blue part of the image is the observations made using the Hubble Space Telescope in 2004 and 2006. The new observations by ALMA (the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array) are shown in orange. These observations were published in 2012. ALMA has so far only observed a part of the ring. This system includes a planet, named Fomalhaut b, and also an extensive ring of dust, seen here

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Fomalhaut dust ring, a mesmerizing celestial phenomenon located approximately 25 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Piscis Austrinus. Combining observations made by both the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ALMA (the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array), this image offers a stunning glimpse into the depths of our universe. The blue portion of the image represents data collected by the HST during its observations in 2004 and 2006. In contrast, the orange hues depict new findings obtained by ALMA, which were published in 2012. It is important to note that ALMA has only observed a fraction of this expansive dust ring thus far. Within this intricate system lies not only a planet named Fomalhaut b but also an extensive ring composed of cosmic debris. This planetary disc holds great significance for astronomers and astrophysicists as it provides valuable insights into protoplanetary formation and planetary science. As we marvel at this awe-inspiring photograph, let us reflect on how it deepens our understanding of extrasolar worlds beyond our own solar system. With each discovery like Fomalhaut's dust ring, we inch closer to unraveling mysteries about alien planets and their place within vast cosmic landscapes.
