Fisheye lens photograph of the aurora borealis

Aurora borealis. A fisheye lens long exposure photograph of a yellow-green aurora borealis (Northern Lights) display; also visible are star trails. Aurorae can be smoky black to flaming red in colour. Aurorae are caused by the interaction between energetic charged particles from the Sun and gas molecules in the upper atmosphere (about 100 kilometres up). On reaching Earth the charged particles are drawn by Earths magnetic field to the poles, where they collide with the upper atmosphere. Star trails are caused by stars apparent movement across the sky due to the rotation of the Earth. Photographed in Finland

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the ethereal beauty of the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. Taken with a fisheye lens and long exposure, the image showcases a mesmerizing display of yellow-green hues dancing across the night sky. The vibrant colors of this natural phenomenon range from smoky black to flaming red, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle. The aurora borealis occurs when energetic charged particles from the Sun interact with gas molecules in Earth's upper atmosphere, approximately 100 kilometers above us. Guided by Earth's magnetic field, these charged particles are drawn towards the poles where they collide with atoms in our atmosphere, resulting in this breathtaking light show. In addition to capturing this celestial event, star trails can be seen streaking across the photograph. These trails are caused by stars' apparent movement due to Earth's rotation. Together with the aurora borealis, they create a captivating composition that exemplifies both natural wonders and scientific phenomena. Photographed in Finland by Science Photo Library, this print serves as a reminder of our planet's extraordinary interactions within its own atmosphere and beyond. Whether displayed for educational purposes or simply admired for its sheer beauty, this image is sure to inspire wonder and appreciation for Earth science and atmospheric phenomena like never before.
