Ferdinand Magellan, Portuguese explorer

Ferdinand Magellan (c.1480-1521), Portuguese navigator and explorer. Magellan is most famous for heading the first expedition to eventually circumnavigate the world. Magellan set sail from Seville, Spain, in August 1519 intending to sail west until he arrived in India, avoiding Portuguese-controlled waters to the east. After crossing the stretch of water below South America, now known as the Strait of Magellan, the fleet struck out across a vast ocean, which Magellan called the Pacific because of its calmness. Over 100 days later they reached the Philippines, where Magellan was killed during a squabble with natives. Only one ship made it back to Spain, arriving in September 1522

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the renowned Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. Known for his groundbreaking expedition that marked the first circumnavigation of the world, Magellan's legacy in maritime exploration is unparalleled. In 1519, he embarked on a daring journey from Seville, Spain with the goal of reaching India by sailing westward and avoiding Portuguese-controlled waters to the east. After navigating through treacherous waters below South America, now famously known as the Strait of Magellan, his fleet ventured into an immense ocean which he aptly named Pacific due to its serene nature. After more than 100 days at sea, they finally arrived in the Philippines where tragedy struck during a clash with native inhabitants resulting in Magellan's untimely demise. Despite this setback, one ship persevered and successfully completed their voyage back to Spain in September 1522. This awe-inspiring illustration captures not only Magellan himself but also symbolizes an era of great historical significance - The Age of Discovery. With meticulous attention to detail and monochrome artistry, it transports us back to a time when intrepid explorers like Ferdinand Magellan fearlessly charted unknown territories and expanded our understanding of our vast planet. This remarkable image serves as a reminder of humanity's insatiable thirst for knowledge and adventure while honoring one man's indelible contribution to global exploration.
