Eye of hurricane Isabel

Eye of hurricane Isabel. This image was taken from the International Space Station on 13th September 2003. At this time, the hurricane had not made landfall, and was classed as category 5, the strongest type of hurricane. At this stage, the winds were gusting at over 250 kilometres per hour. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems that typically form in late summer. They are powered by evaporation from a warm sea surface, and weaken as they pass over land. Hurricane Isabel is one of the largest and most powerful hurricanes of recent years. It hit the east coast of the USA on 18th September 2003

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring Eye of Hurricane Isabel, taken from the International Space Station on September 13th, 2003. At this moment, the hurricane had not yet reached land and was classified as a category 5 storm, boasting unimaginable strength. With winds gusting at over 250 kilometers per hour, it exemplified the sheer power and intensity of these colossal rotating storm systems. Hurricanes like Isabel typically form during late summer months when warm sea surfaces fuel their evaporation-driven force. As they traverse over land, their potency gradually diminishes. However, Hurricane Isabel defied expectations as one of the largest and most formidable hurricanes in recent history. On September 18th, 2003, this mighty storm made its devastating impact on the east coast of the United States. The image showcases an ominous scene with cloudy skies and turbulent winds swirling around its central eye—a mesmerizing sight that both captivates and humbles viewers. Taken by Earth observation experts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), this meteorological marvel serves as a reminder of nature's immense power and our vulnerability to its forces. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable ISS imagery depicting Hurricane Isabel on that fateful day in September—offering us a glimpse into an extreme weather event that left an indelible mark on our collective memory.
