Eohippus. Artists impression of the extinct horse Eohippus, also known as Hyracotherium
Eohippus. Artists impression of the extinct horse Eohippus, also known as Hyracotherium. This species lived during the Eocene epoch between 60 and 45 million years ago. It is thought to be the first true horse. It measured 20cm high at the shoulder and 60cm in length. It had 4 hoofed toes on the front feet and 3 hoofed toes on the hind feet. As primitive horses evolved, subsequent species lost the use of the outer toes until the modern-day horse evolved, with only one hoofed toe
