Emulsion photo of a cosmic ray pion
Emulsion photograph showing the birth & death of a cosmic ray pion (or pi-meson). A primary cosmic ray has struck & shattered an atomic nucleus to form the " star" at the bottom of the picture. Among the fragments of the collision, a pion has been created which forms the track moving towards the top right. The pion soon strikes another nucleus, forming a second " star". The length of the pions track is about 0.11 mm. The picture, taken in 1947 by Lattes, Occhialini & Powell, was one of the first observations of the creation of a pion. EDITORS COMMENTS
This emulsion photo captures the mesmerizing birth and death of a cosmic ray pion, also known as a pi-meson. The image showcases the remarkable journey of this subatomic particle, shedding light on the intricate workings of our universe. At the bottom of the picture, we witness an atomic nucleus shattered by a primary cosmic ray impact, forming what appears to be a celestial "star". Amidst the fragments resulting from this collision, a pion emerges and embarks on its fleeting existence. Its path is clearly visible as it moves towards the top right corner of the photograph. However, this pion's journey is far from over. In an astonishing turn of events captured in this image, it collides with another atomic nucleus along its trajectory, giving rise to yet another radiant "star". This extraordinary phenomenon demonstrates both creation and destruction occurring simultaneously within our vast cosmos. The length of this particular pion's track measures approximately 0.11 mm—a minuscule distance that holds immense significance for scientists studying particle physics. Taken in 1947 by Lattes, Occhialini & Powell, pioneers in their field at that time, this groundbreaking photograph represents one of humanity's earliest observations documenting such an event. As we delve into the depths of particle physics through images like these preserved by Science Photo Library (not affiliated with any commercial use), we embark on an odyssey exploring unseen realms where particles dance and collide—unveiling secrets hidden within our universe's fabric.
