Emission nebulae IC 1848 and IC 1805

Emission nebulae IC 1805 and IC 1848. North is at top. These nebulae are also known as the Heart and Soul nebulae. The Soul nebula (IC 1848) is at lower left, with the Heart nebula (IC 1805) at centre right. These are huge clouds of gas and dust that glow as the hydrogen they contain is ionised by radiation from the hot young stars that have formed within them. The centre of the Heart nebula contains the open star cluster Melotte 15, which illuminates the surrounding nebula. The cluster contains around 40 stars, all of which formed just 1.3 million years ago, very young in stellar terms. The nebulae lie around 7000 light years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. Photographed by the 1.22-metre Oschin Telescope at Mount Palomar, California, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of emission nebulae IC 1848 and IC 1805, also known as the Heart and Soul nebulae. Positioned with north at the top, these colossal clouds of gas and dust illuminate the night sky with their vibrant colors. The lower left corner showcases the Soul nebula (IC 1848), while at center right lies the Heart nebula (IC 1805). These celestial wonders glow due to ionization caused by radiation from hot young stars that have formed within them. At the heart of the captivating Heart nebula resides an open star cluster called Melotte 15. This cluster, consisting of approximately 40 stars, is incredibly youthful in stellar terms, having formed a mere 1.3 million years ago. Located around 7000 light years away from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia, these distant marvels were expertly captured by the renowned Oschin Telescope at Mount Palomar Observatory in California. The photograph not only highlights their ethereal splendor but also provides insights into astrophysics and stellar evolution. With its rich details showcasing galactic phenomena such as HII regions and open clusters like Collinder 33 and Collinder34, this image serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation of our vast universe.
