Edison light bulb, 19th-century artwork. This design is one of the early version of the light bulb invented by US inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931). Edisons first design was produced in 1879 (patented 1880). The design of the incandescent light bulb went through several changes before reaching the form known today. Here, a switch is at lower right, and wires are seen in the socket (bottom). The filament is at top, enclosed in glass.
