Durers Syphilitic

Durers Syphilitic, 1495-1496. Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) was a German artist. His skillful use of perspective and mathematical proportions made him one of the outstanding artistic figures of the early 16th century. This woodcut depicts a man infected with syphilis, noticeable by the skin pustules covering his face, wrists and legs. Syphilis is a sexually-transmitted infection spread by the Treponema pallidum bacterium. This woodcut was published between 1495-96, soon after the first European syphilis epidemics occurred in 1494. It is thought syphilis was introduced from the newly discovered Americas. Taken from Dr Willi Kurths The Complete Woodcuts of Albrecht Durer (1936)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Durers Syphilitic" showcases the incredible talent of German artist Albrecht Durer. Created between 1495-1496, this woodcut depicts a man afflicted with syphilis during the early 16th century. Durer's masterful use of perspective and mathematical proportions is evident in every intricate detail of this haunting illustration. The subject's face, wrists, and legs are covered in skin pustules, unmistakable signs of the sexually-transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum bacterium. This woodcut was published shortly after the first European syphilis epidemics emerged in 1494, believed to have been introduced from the newly discovered Americas. Dr. Willi Kurths included this powerful artwork in his collection "The Complete Woodcuts of Albrecht Durer" (1936), emphasizing its historical significance within genitourinary medicine. The image serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that diseases like syphilis had on society during the Renaissance period. Through this thought-provoking piece, we are transported back to a time when medical knowledge was limited and venereal diseases were shrouded in mystery. It stands as a testament to both Durer's artistic prowess and our ever-evolving understanding of biology and medicine throughout history. This print from Science Photo Library offers us an opportunity to reflect on our past while appreciating how far we have come in combating infectious diseases like syphilis today.
