Data showing the distribution of dark matter

Dark matter distribution. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data showing the distribution of invisible dark matter in a cluster of galaxies. This 3- dimensional map shows the concentration of dark matter as height, with individual galaxies appear- ing as pinnacles. This map was produced by analys- ing light from a distant galaxy that had been bent by the gravity of a nearer cluster of galaxies. This gravitational lens created multiple images of the distant galaxy that allowed the mass distribu- tion to be calculated; the mass of visible matter, such as stars, was then subtracted. Most of the galaxy clusters mass was found to be dark matter. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate distribution of dark matter in a cluster of galaxies, as revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The three-dimensional map portrays the concentration of invisible dark matter, with individual galaxies emerging like majestic pinnacles. To create this extraordinary visualization, scientists meticulously analyzed light emanating from a distant galaxy that had been gravitationally distorted by a closer cluster of galaxies—an effect known as gravitational lensing. This phenomenon generated multiple images of the remote galaxy, enabling researchers to calculate the mass distribution. By subtracting the mass contributed by visible matter such as stars, they discovered that most of the cluster's mass is composed of enigmatic dark matter. The image not only offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into our universe but also represents a significant milestone in cosmological research. It exemplifies how cutting-edge technology and innovative analysis techniques can unravel hidden cosmic mysteries. As we delve deeper into understanding dark matter—the elusive substance believed to make up around 85% of all matter in existence—images like this serve as invaluable tools for astronomers and physicists alike. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable visual testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about space and its enigmatic constituents: dark matter. Through their lens, we are transported on an odyssey through time and space—a journey where scientific curiosity fuels our exploration beyond what meets the eye.
