EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a coriander fruit, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals a cross-section of the fruit pod, which is commonly used as a culinary spice in various dishes. Coriander, scientifically known as Coriandrum sativum, belongs to the apiaceae family and shares its lineage with other popular food crops like carrots, celery, dill, and cumin. The dried fruits of this plant are widely utilized for their warm, nutty, spicy flavor that adds depth to curries and pickling recipes. Additionally, they are often incorporated into alcoholic beverages. When crushed or cut open like in this photograph's half section view, these coriander pods release an invigorating aroma reminiscent of lemony citrus due to the presence of terpenes such as linalool and pinene. This unique scent profile makes them both aromatic and flavorful. While typically consumed in their dried form for culinary purposes, it is worth noting that these coriander fruits can also be enjoyed when green. Their versatility extends beyond just being a spice; they serve as an essential ingredient in many cuisines around the world. With a magnification level of x15.7 when printed at 10 centimeters wide on display here, this SEM image offers us an up-close glimpse into the biological structure and fascinating details within nature's edible treasures.
