Conybeare Plesiosaurus reconstruction

1824. Composite of letter and wrapper written by William Conybeare regarding his first scientific reconstruction of the skeletons of plesiosaur and ichthyosaur. Sides, a letter to Webster accompanied his submission to the Geological Society for the " On the Discovery of an almost perfect Skeleton of the Plesiosaurus" Transactions of the Geological Society, Second Series, Volume 1, page 381-390. The large folio plate (central) is the first scientific reconstruction of any prehistoric reptile and appeared in that volume as " Restoration of the Plesiosaurus dolichoderius and Ichthyosaurus communis". Plate LXIX drawn by Conybeare, lithograph by Scharfe, print by Hullimandel. In the letter Conybeare mentions an original drawing of the specimen by Mary Anning and implies its importance. Biographers of Anning point out she received little formal credit for her discoveries. P.D.Stewart collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Conybeare Plesiosaurus reconstruction, a significant milestone in the field of paleontology. The composite image features a letter and wrapper written by William Conybeare himself, shedding light on his groundbreaking scientific reconstruction of the skeletons of plesiosaur and ichthyosaur. Accompanying his submission to the Geological Society for "On the Discovery of an almost perfect Skeleton of the Plesiosaurus" this historical artifact holds immense value. The sides reveal a letter addressed to Webster, providing insights into Conybeare's meticulous research process. It is fascinating to note that he acknowledges an original drawing of the specimen by Mary Anning, hinting at her crucial contribution despite receiving little formal credit for her discoveries. The centerpiece of this composition is a large folio plate depicting the first-ever scientific reconstruction of any prehistoric reptile. Titled "Restoration of the Plesiosaurus dolichoderius and Ichthyosaurus communis" it appeared in Volume 1, page 381-390, as part of Transactions of the Geological Society's Second Series. Drawn by Conybeare himself and skillfully lithographed by Scharfe with printing executed by Hullimandel, this masterpiece exemplifies both artistic talent and scientific precision. Transporting us back to Devon during the 19th century, this artwork captures not only our imagination but also represents a pivotal moment in paleontological history. With its depiction of marine reptiles from Jurassic times such as ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs found in Lyme Regis' Lias formation, it serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit for knowledge about Earth's ancient inhabitants. This remarkable piece belongs to Paul D. Stewart collection—a treasure trove preserving our understanding and appreciation for these magnificent creatures that once roamed our planet millions of years ago.
