Coloured SEM of the head of a tick, Ixodes sp

Lyme disease tick. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a tick (Ixodes sp.), the principal vector of Lyme disease. At lower centre is the long saw-like proboscis (hypostome) the tick uses to puncture the skin and suck blood. The tick is common in Europe and attacks humans, domestic and wild animals. Ixodes sp. ticks can carry the spirochaete bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, cause of both Lyme disease and a closely-related disease known as erythema migrans. Both diseases cause skin lesions, neurological and cardiac abnormalities, and recurrent arthritis. Magnification: x60 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an Ixodes sp. tick, which is the primary carrier of Lyme disease. At the lower centre of the image, we can observe its remarkable long saw-like proboscis (hypostome), used to pierce the skin and feed on blood. This tick species is prevalent in Europe and poses a threat to both humans and various domestic and wild animals. Ixodes sp. ticks are notorious for carrying Borrelia burgdorferi, a spirochaete bacteria responsible for causing Lyme disease as well as erythema migrans, a closely-related condition. These diseases manifest through skin lesions, neurological disorders, cardiac abnormalities, and recurring arthritis. The magnification level employed in capturing this image was x60 at 6x7cm size, allowing us to appreciate intricate details that would otherwise remain hidden from our eyes. As nature enthusiasts delve into this photograph's depths, it serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between arachnids like ticks and their impact on human health. Science Photo Library presents this awe-inspiring snapshot not only as an exploration into zoology but also with utmost respect for wildlife preservation. It encapsulates the essence of these tiny yet formidable creatures while shedding light on their role as vectors for debilitating diseases such as Lyme disease and erythema migrans.
