Coloured SEM of an earthworm, Lumbricus t

Common earthworm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the rear end of a common earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris). The anus (light brown) is found on the earthworms last segment (pygidium). Also visible are the chaetae, tiny thorn-like projections which are used for movement. Adult earthworms can grow up to 30cm in length. Their diet consists of organic substances in the soil. They aid the regeneration of mineral supplies, and their movement helps to break up the soil and improve aeration. They are thus vital to the regeneration of arable soils. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a common earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris. The colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) focuses on the rear end of this fascinating invertebrate. At first glance, one's attention is drawn to the light brown anus located on the earthworm's last segment, known as the pygidium. Upon closer inspection, we can also observe tiny thorn-like projections called chaetae that cover its body. These chaetae play a crucial role in facilitating movement for these creatures. Adult earthworms can reach an impressive length of up to 30cm and are essential contributors to our ecosystem. Earthworms primarily feed on organic substances found in soil, aiding in the regeneration of mineral supplies necessary for plant growth. Furthermore, their constant burrowing and wriggling movements help break up compacted soil and improve aeration. As such, they play a vital role in maintaining healthy arable soils. This mesmerizing image serves as a reminder of nature's intricate wonders that often go unnoticed by our naked eyes. It highlights not only the beauty but also the importance of these humble creatures within our ecosystem.
