Common earthworm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the rear end of a common earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris). The anus (light brown) is found on the earthworms last segment (pygidium). Also visible are the chaetae, tiny thorn-like projections which are used for movement. Adult earthworms can grow up to 30cm in length. Their diet consists of organic substances in the soil.
