Charon gas engine, 1897

Charon gas engine. 19th-century artwork of a French design of gas engine known as a Charon engine. This one has two cylinders (lower right) for electric lighting. A gas engine is an internal combustion engine that runs on a gas fuel, such as natural gas, instead of the petrol used in car engines. Gas engines are usually used in heavy-duty industrial settings, such as factories. The first practical gas engines were developed in the 1860s. Artwork from the first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the innovative Charon gas engine, a remarkable French design from the late 19th century. Developed as an alternative to traditional petrol engines, this particular model features two cylinders dedicated to electric lighting, positioned in the lower right corner of the artwork. Gas engines like this one revolutionized heavy-duty industrial settings such as factories by harnessing natural gas as fuel instead. The historical significance of this technological marvel cannot be overstated. Originating in the 1860s, these early gas engines paved the way for modern internal combustion engines that power our cars today. The intricate illustration captures every detail of this engineering masterpiece with precision and elegance. Created by Jules-Louis Breton, a renowned French chemist and inventor, this artwork was featured in La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle's first volume published in 1897. Breton's passion for scientific exploration is evident through his meticulous depiction of machinery and equipment. As we gaze upon this monochrome image filled with history and innovation, we are reminded of how far we have come technologically. This extraordinary piece serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our constant pursuit of progress throughout Europe's rich industrial past.
