The Four Cardinal Virtues Temperance

Late 15thth century marble-inlay mosaic of Temperance, one of the four Cardinal Virtues, along with Justice, Prudence and Fortitude, that are portrayed in the marble pavement of the interior of the Cathedral of Siena. Temperance is depicted as a woman pouring a liquid from one jug or amphora to another. This represents the dilution of wine with water, or perhaps the blending or synthesis of opposites. Plato identified the four cardinal virtues in the 4tht century BC in the Protagoras, later they became part of the Christian tradition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a late 15th-century marble-inlay mosaic of Temperance, one of the four Cardinal Virtues, within the magnificent Cathedral of Siena. Alongside Justice, Prudence, and Fortitude, these virtues are depicted in the mesmerizing marble pavement. The image portrays Temperance as an elegant woman gracefully pouring liquid from one jug to another. Symbolically, this act represents the dilution of wine with water or perhaps the harmonious blending and synthesis of opposites. This concept finds its roots in ancient Greece when Plato identified these cardinal virtues in his philosophical work Protagoras during the 4th century BC. Over time, they became integral to Christian tradition. The intricate iconography captured in this photograph not only reflects Renaissance artistry but also embodies profound philosophical ideals. The fusion of mythological elements with religious symbolism is evident through this mosaic's depiction on the cathedral floor. The use of marble inlay adds a touch of grandeur and permanence to this masterpiece while highlighting its enduring significance throughout history. As viewers gaze upon this remarkable artwork, they are reminded of the importance of moderation and balance in life – values that transcend time and culture. Science Photo Library presents us with yet another extraordinary visual representation that invites contemplation on timeless themes such as virtue and wisdom found within our shared human experience.
