Caesium atomic clock

Caesium atomic clock. In this clock, atoms of vapourised caesium-133 oscillate between two energy levels as they pass back and forth between magnets at each end of the resonator (long cylinder, lower left). Counting these oscillations is the basis of the standard second, where one second is about 9193 million oscillations. The development of the first caesium atomic clock by Louis Essen and Jack Parry in 1955 led to the replacement of the astronomical second with the atomic second as the standard unit of time. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Caesium atomic clock, a groundbreaking invention that revolutionized timekeeping. Developed by Louis Essen and Jack Parry in 1955, this technological marvel replaced the astronomical second with the atomic second as the standard unit of time. The image captures the intricate inner workings of this scientific masterpiece at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK. At its core, atoms of vapourised caesium-133 oscillate between two energy levels as they traverse between magnets positioned at each end of the resonator – a long cylinder visible in the lower left corner. The photograph not only highlights the meticulous craftsmanship behind this clock but also emphasizes its significance in measuring time accurately. Each oscillation represents an astonishing 9193 million cycles per second, forming the foundation for our modern understanding of time. A distinguished scientist can be seen intently working on adjustments to ensure precise measurements. This snapshot transports us back to a pivotal moment in history when advancements in mathematics and physics intersected to redefine our perception of time itself. As we gaze upon this historical artifact frozen in time, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and progress. The Caesium atomic clock stands as a testament to human ingenuity and serves as an enduring symbol of how science continues to shape our world today.
