Black ruffed lemur

Black ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata variegata) hanging from a branch. This primate is endemic to the east coast rainforests of Madagascar where it spends most of its time high in the canopy. It is the largest of the true lemurs with its body growing up to 55 centimetres in length and a tail that can reach 60 centimetres in length. It mainly feeds on fruit, but will also take nectar, seeds and leaves. It is a social animal living in matriarchal groups of up to 30 individuals.
